Changuu Island, commonly referred to as Prison Island, is just a 20 – 30 minute boat ride from Stone Town. Arriving by boat the first thing you will see is a rustic wooden bridge jutting out into the azure blue water of the Indian Ocean. The primary attractions are the giant tortoises and the prison ruins.
Historically, Prison Island was first used by Arab slave merchants as a place to detain slaves, and in 1890 the British built what was intended as a prison for slaves. Although the building was never used as a prison, The island is fringed with a small but beautiful coral reef. You can see and do several activities depend to the time,
Snorkeling is optional and the tour can be extended to nakupenda Sandbank where you can swim,relax on a white sand and have tropical fruits while waiting for seafood lunch, after we will take our boat ride back to stone town where we left our car and drive back to hotel.
